Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry stands alone

Adewale, former slave and first mate of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway, is gaining his freedom a second time with the announcement that Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry has broken free from its DLC shackles.

Now a stand-alone game, Freedom Cry follows Adewale, shipwrecked in 18th-century Haiti, as he struggles to raise a crew and ship to set sail away from the seething cauldron of slavery. Obviously, the game is set before the Haitian Revolution, the first successful slave revolt in the Americas that in turn gave birth to the the first black republic in the world.

Adewale finds himself drawn into the Maroon community, formed by runaway slaves, and in turn drawn into their struggle. Basically, it’s Roots meets Hitman. And, now that its not just add-on content for Black Flag, it’s a must buy for fans of powerful, emotional storytelling with a bit of the old ultraviolence.

Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry will be available as a stand-alone download on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on February 18 and for PC on February 25 for $14.99 USD.
